  • Description

President Jsan Bedal Bokassa of the Central African Republic left Uganda on Monday (4 September) after making the first official visit to the country by an African head of state, since President Idi Amin came to power 18 months ago.

He was seen off at Entebbe Airport by President Amin and Ugandan ministers.

A communique said the two leaders had agreed to set up a joint commission to study areas for co-operation between Uganda and the Central African Republic.

This could include the training of soldiers from the Central African Republic at a paratroop school in Uganda. The Communique also condemned spartheid.

At a banquet the evening before the airport departure, President Amin compared President Bokassa's recent penal measure with his own directive that armed robbers should be shot on sight. President Amin said he had now signed a decree legalising this action.

He presented President Bokassa with Uganda's highest honour, the Order of the Source of the Nile and in turn received the Grand Order of the National Order of the Central African Republic.
