  • Description

AMERICAN ARMY NEWSMEN, WORKING FOR THE U.S. MILITARY BROADCASTING NETWORK (AFVN), IN SOUTH VIETNAM ALLEGED ON TUESDAY (6 JANUARY) THAT NEWS CENSORSHIP EXISTS IN THE ARMY'S BROADCASTS. AMONG THE MEN INTERVIEWED WAS SPECIALIST FIFTH CLASS ROBERT E. LAWRENCE WHO SPARKED OFF THE CONTROVERSY LAST SATURDAY (3 JANUARY) BY COMPLAINING OF NEWS CENSORSHIP IN U.S. MILITARY BROADCASTS AT THE END OF A LATE-NIGHT NEWS PROGRAMME OVER THE ARMED FORCES NETWORK IN SAIGON.

THE U.S. ARMY ANNOUNCED ON THURSDAY (8 JANUARY) THAT LAWRENCE IS TO BE COURT-MARTIALLED FOR INSUBORDINATION. BUT THE SPOKESMAN SAID THE CHARGE WAS INSUBORDINATION FOR USING DISRESPECTFUL LANGUAGE TO HIS SERGEANT.

IN HIS BROADCAST ALLEGATIONS LAWRENCE SAID: "I HOPE YOU'LL STOP CENSORSHIP AT AFVN AND ANY AMERICAN STATION UNDER MILITARY RULE." TO A REPORTER, HE SAID IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE LEARN THAT U.S. TROOPS WERE NOT GETTING ALL THE NEWS ACCURATELY.

A SOLDIER WHO WRITES NEWS STORIES ABOUT HIS UNIT ALSO DISCUSSED THE CENSORSHIP CHARGES SAYING HE WAS NOT ALLOWED TO TELL ABOUT CERTAIN THINGS WHICH HAPPENED.

A SOLDIER OF THE 25TH INFANTRY DIVISION AT FIRE BASE DEVIN NORTHWEST OF SAIGON SAID HE DID NOT BELIEVE ALL THAT CAME OVER THE RADIO.
