Background: British motor cyclist Phil Read road a four-cylinder Japanese Yamaha to victory in the 125 c.c. Lightweight Tourist Trophy race at the Isle of Man International meeting today (Wednesday). Later fellow British rider, champion Mike Hailwood set a series of new records by winning the 350 c.c. junior Tourist Trophy race.

Phil Read completed the 113 mile (182 km) course in one hour, nine minutes 40.8 seconds, at an average speed of 97.48 miles per hour (157 kph).

Only 3.4 seconds separated him from fellow British rider Stuart Graham, on a Suzuki. Japan's Akiyasu Motohashi was third on a Yamaha.

Had Graham beaten Read he would have pulled off the first father-and-son T.T. double in history -- Graham's father Les Graham, won this race in 1953, the year in which he was killed in the senior T.T. race.

Britain's world motor-cycle champion Mike Hailwood seized more laurels today, and became the first rider to achieve II T.T. victories with his win in the 350 c.c. event.

Hailwood, riding a Japanese six-cylinder Honda, sped around the six-lap mountain circuit at a record average speed of 105 miles per hour (172 kph). He took out a third record with a new lap record of 21 minutes 0.8 seconds, averaging 107.73 mph (173 kph).

Italian Giacomo Agostini was second on a three-cylinder MV and Britain's Dereck Woodman finished third.

Hailwood's performance today puts the seal on a dazzling display of motor cycle racing during this Isle of Man International meeting. His win in the 250 c.c. lightweight event yesterday brought him level with Irishman Stanley Wood's T.T. record set 27 years ago, and his victory today makes him the sports's undisputed top dog.
