"Relaxation was also the password last night, as the world's most glamorous girls took over Perth's most exclusive nightclub, Hannibals. Security took a back seat as the girls warmed tot he infectious disco beat, danced with males not overawed by the occasion -- and posed happily for the myriad of photographers and cameramen also invited for the occasion. For Channel 7 cameraman Lu Belci, it was a memorable assignment -- and his pictures indicate that not only the girls were enjoying themselves.

"Among those on the dance floor were Miss Mauritius, Marie Francoise Genevieve Chanea...

...and Miss Honduras, Fina Maria Weidner... The judges haven't even begun their unenviable job, but early markets have installed Miss England, Carolyn Ann Seaward, the early favourite. She's quoted at six to four. Miss Austria, Karin Theresia Zorn, is one of three on the second line, only half a point longer. Another of the trio is Miss Bermuda, Gina Ann Casandra Swainson -- and completing it is Miss Wales, Janet Beverley Hobson.

"Yurika Kuroda, Miss Japan, is another of the top fancies, as so too Miss Peru -- Jacqueline Brahms. But last night was one the girls did not want to see end.

"And perhaps Miss U.S.A., Mary Theresa Friel and Miss Aruba, Lugina Vilchez, typified the friendships already made int he midst of competition."

Background: Aspirants to the title of Miss Universe 1979 are converging on Perth for three weeks of sight-seeing and preparations before the big judgement at the end of July. Thirty girls from all over the world are popping the eyes of the locals, whose only contact with such international talent has previously been confined to the television. The Miss Universe contest is being held in Perth on July 20th as part of the city's 150th anniversary celebrations. And as Gordon Leed of Perth's TVW-7 network reports, the normally sleepy city will not be the same again.
