Ships and aircraft of the United States Atlantic Fleet have joined with units of several South American navies to take part in Exercise Unitas XI. The combined naval exercise is the eleventh in which the U.S. Navy has taken part.
The exercise, which will continue through to the first of December, is an annual event for units of the United States and Latin American navies.
The Unitas series is a composite part of American naval strategy in the South Atlantic and an integral part of defence policy within the Organisation of American States.
During the lengthy exercise the United States also continues its aid policy and goodwill missions to the Latin American countries.
In addition to the military exercises, American personnel provide medical supplies and other gifts to orphanages throughout the Latin American continent. They also sponsor sports activities, tours aboard American ships and other social activities.
