  • Description

The death of Chairman Mao Tse Tung, the 82-year-old leader of The People's Republic of China, was announced to the people of the world's largest communist nation in the traditional manner.

SYNOPSIS: Seventeen hours after he died, the news was put on Chinese television screens over a still photograph, with a music background.

The television announcements, monitored in Hong Kong, said Chairman Mao passed away at ten minutes past midnight local time on Wednesday September the ninth. In the words of the announcement, he died "because of the worsening of his illness and despite all treatment, although meticulous medical care was given to him in every way after he fell ill".

In neighbouring Hong Kong, Chairman Mao's death was immediately acknowledged. Flags were lowered to half-mast, and the population stopped work to wonder at the passing of the man who ruled one of the world's biggest nations for the past 30 years.

Mao Tse Tung, who allowed Hong Kong to be governed by the British under a lease which expires in 16 years, was 82 when he died after a period of questionable health. He rose to become one of the world's most powerful leaders after being born the son of a peasant.
