  • Description

Ahmed Fathi Ridwan, newly-appointed Ambassador of the United Arab Republic to Jordan, arrived at Raghadan Palace, Amman, Nov. 1. and presented his credentials to King Hussein - formal seal of the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries, broken off two years ago.

The newly-healed breach almost came apart again shortly after Ridwan's arrival in Jordan, Oct. 29, when UAR propaganda sources bombarded King Hussein because of a speech he made to the Jordanian Army at Akaba, Oct. 29. King Hussein promised that his desert army was ready to save the Iraqi people from Communism - should the Kassem regime be overthrown. "It was for the Iraqi people alone to decide their own fate," he said.

Pro-Nasser newspapers in the Lebanon greeted the remark with "The free, and the free alone will liberate Iraq. Slaves should keep their mouths shut". An implication that King Hussein was a British stooge. Neither was General Kassem grateful for King Hussein's offer of help. In an interview in hospital, he described the King as a "scion" of treason".

Meanwhile both the UAR and Jordan, two most interested parties in the Iraqi struggle for power, watch the situation carefully. Iraq loomed like a dark shadow over the meeting Nov. 2. of the Shah of Persia and King Hussein, when the Persian ruler arrived on a four-day ceremonial visit.
