Meeting at the Rome headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (F.A.O.), delegates?
Meeting at the Rome headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (F.A.O.), delegates from 14 West African countries have been working out a joint medium-term programme for the future activities of the West Africa Rice Development Association (WARDA). Also represented are observer delegations from France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and various United Nations and international organisations with interested affiliations.
The West African areas are estimated to consume 1.6 million tons of rice each year--at a cost of 55 million dollars (nearly 23 million pounds sterling). The aim of FAO and WARDA is to bring about a "green revolution" which will release this hard currency for other much needed expenses for development of the area.
The conference opened on March 22 and will close on March 26.
