  • Description

Thirty-four people were killed when a Greek airliner carrying 53 passengers and crew crashed into the sea near Athens on Saturday night (21 October).

The twin-turbo jet, a japanese-made YS-11, was on a flight from the Ionian island of Corfu to Athens when it flopped into the sea off Voula beach, a minute's flight from Athens' airport.

Survivors told how they escaped from the 'plane and swam for their lives before it sank. Some of them were injured by waves which hurled them against the rocks at Voula beach.

Helicopters, patrol ships and frogmen worked in rough seas and torrential rain to search for survivors. Efforts were made to refloat the submerged airliner and free bodies trapped inside.

An inquiry has already started into the cause of the accident.
