Background: The Jordanian Ministry of Health and the Red Crescent (Jordanian Red Cross) organisation have opened blood donation centres to aid the wounded in the conflict between Arabs and Israelis in southern Lebanon. Four centres have been set up in the Jordanian capital of Amman and other blood banks will open throughout the country. Several people attended the Red Crescent Hospital in Amman on June 8 but the response was not as good as had been expected, because the scheme was not widely publicised. The simple blood-donor procedure was explained by clinic staff to each prospective donor, whose blood is first tested for suitability. The blood is stored in refrigerators and will be transported to hospitals and clinics where fighting -- and thus, casualties -- are heaviest in southern Lebanon.
