Background: Belgian soldiers, serving with the 3rd Paratroop Battalion, began arriving back at Brussels Airport, April 11. They had been withdrawn from the breakaway Katanga province in the Congo Republic.
Relatives and friends waited at the airport to greet them. It was on April 5 that Belgium notified the United Nations that she was willing to comply with the Security Council resolution (passed Feb 21) calling for the withdrawal of her military and para-military personnel from the Congo.
The withdrawal of Belgium forces has been one of the main issues in the recent UN deliberations on the Congo situation. Following the revelation of the Belgian decision on April 5, 13 Afro-Asian nations and Yugoslavia called on the General Assembly to give Belgium just 21 days to get her military and political personnel out of the Congo.
