  • Description

Ministers and senior officials from the 131-member nations of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) started three weeks of discussions in Rome on Saturday (8 November) on the future of the fight against world hunger.

In one of its early decisions, the conference decided to admit the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) as official observer.

The move was opposed by Israel and the United States.

The organisation also elected a new Director-General, Mr.mansour rouhani, of Iran, to succeed Dr.Addeke Boerma, who has retired after eight years as chief executive.

Mr. Rouhani suggested the setting-up of an international institution to channel excess world food production to needy countries at fixed prices.

He told the delegates that the era of abundant and cheap raw materials had passed, and that affluent societies must not waste the world's valuable natural resources.
