    Chile's Foreign Minister, Mr. Clodomiro Almeyda, visited Moscow on Wednesday (26 May), as part of a month-long tour of eight socialist countries.

    The purpose of the trip is for him to hold political talks, while a technical mission, which he nominally heads, will discuss trade and credits in the eight countries.

    This is the first major attempt by the government of Marxist President Salvador Allende to open new markets and obtain credits in the countries of eastern Europe. The tour coincides with the President's recent report to his Congress, in which he stated that he desires increasing exchanges with the socialist world, to protect his country's economic and cultural interests.

    Following talks with Soviet officials, the Chilean Foreign Minister paid his respects to the tomb of the unknown soldier.

    SYNOPSIS: Chile's Foreign Minister, Mr. Clodomiro Almeyda, visited Moscow on Wednesday, as part of a month-long tour of eight socialist countries. This trip is the first major attempt by the government of Marxist President Salvador Allende to open new markets and obtain credits in eastern European countries.

    The political and trade missions, headed by Mr. Almeyda, are interested in importing machinery chemical products, and equipment for a fishing port. In return the can offer the eight countries a variety of goods including copper iron ore, wines and fruits. Chile hopes to obtain major products through credits. Manufacturing plants would be negotiated through the formation of mixed companies, which would be owned by the Chile government and the foreign governments.

    Following negotiations with Soviet officials, Mr. Almeyda visited the tomb of the unknown soldier in Moscow. Members of Chile's trade and political missions, as well as Soviet officials, were on hand for the wreath laying ceremony. The move to open up new trade markets for Chile coincides with President Allende's recent report to his Congress. In the report, he stated that he desired increasing exchanges with the socialist world in order to protect his country's economic and cultural interests.

    After completing talks in the eastern European countries, Foreign Minister Almeyda will visit Britain and France, before returning to Chile.
