Background: Turkish undercover narcotics agents made their second major drugs haul within a week when they seized hashish valued at GBP85,000 (US$221,000) in Istanbul on Thursday (19 April). Four men were arrested.
The previous big haul was made on 14 April, when narcotics agents seized 880 lbs (400 kg) of hashish, worth GBP170,000 (US$442,000), hidden in tins of pickle.
In the new narcotics operation, a policeman posing as a drug buyer bluffed his way into an apartment where the hashish was hidden. Other agents moved in to seize the drugs and arrest the alleged operators of the smuggling ring. Later, in front of a television camera, one of the arrested men pointed out the leader of the ring.
SYNOPSIS: A Turkish drug squad detective identified by his hat, in his moment of triumph as he rounds up a gang of drug smugglers and a GBP85,000 haul of hashish in Istanbul on Thursday. It was the second major success by Turkish narcotics agents within a week.
The policeman posed as a buyer of drugs to uncover the hashish ring. His assignment led him from a jeweller's shop in Istanbul's Grand Bazaar to a private apartment. Other agents moved in and the hashish was seized. Four men were arrested and charged with operating the smuggling ring. The hashish is believed to have come from Syria. On 14 April, GBP170,000 worth of hashish was seized in a similar undercover operation.
Later, at police headquarters, one suspect pointed out the alleged boss of the smuggling ring.
