  • Description

A GAS EXPLOSION RIPPED THROUGH A JAPANESE MINE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY), KILLING 238 MINERS. ABOUT THE SAME NUMBER ESCAPED THE BLAST, BUT MANY WERE INJURED AND TAKEN TO HOSPITAL. RESCUE TEAMS WORKED THROUGHOUT THE DAY RECOVERING BODIES.

THE EXPLOSION OCCURRED 1,500 FEET (457 METRES) UNDERGROUND AT FUKUOKA, ON JAPAN'S SOUTHERN MAIN ISLAND OF KYUSHU. MANY OF THE DEAD WERE SMOTHERED OR CRUSHED BY HUNDREDS OF TONS OF ROCK.

A SURVIVOR SAID HE WAS BLOWN NEAR THE VERTICAL SHAFT, WHICH TOOK HIM TO SAFETY. BUT, HE SAID, HE COULD SEE THAT THE VENTILATION SYSTEM HAD BEEN DAMAGED AND "THERE WAS A STRONG SMELL OF GAS SEEPING UP FROM THE PIT BELOW."
RESCUE WORKERS WERE HAMPERED BY TUNNELS SEALED OFF BY THE FALLING ROCK. ANOTHER SHAFT WAS TO BE SUNK TO REACH SOME OF THE BODIES. TODAY'S REPORTS SAY 219 OF THEM HAVE BEEN RECOVERED.

TRADE UNION LEADERS HAVE ACCUSED THE MINE OWNERS AND MANAGERS OF SACRIFICING THEIR MEN'S SAFETY IN THEIR EAGERNESS FRO GREATER PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFITS.

THE DISASTER, THE THIRD WORST IN JAPANESE MINING HISTORY, CAME ONLY FOUR DAYS AFTER AN EXPLOSION KILLED MORE THAN 250 IN AN INDIAN MINE.
