  • Description

Dieter Quester of Austria won the Macao Grand Prix on Sunday (29 November) at an average speed of 81.04 miles-an-hour.

The young Austrian, driving a BMW, let from the start.

Asia's premier motor-racing event is run over a distance of 171 miles....45 laps of the Macao circuit which winds through the streets and along the waterfront.

Several former champions were taking part, but the field was reduced by a string of mechanical failures which accounted for three of them. With little real opposition left Quester pressed further and further into the lead until, at the finishing line, he was a full two laps clear of the second driver Albert Poon of Hong Kong.

Australia's Don O'Sullivan was placed third with an average speed 10 miles-an-hour slower than the winner.

Surrounded afterwards by newsmen, Quester declared that the race was an easy one.
