Background: BRITISH MINISTERS LEAVE ADMIRALTY HOUSE TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AFTER A MEETING OF THE CABINET - REGARDED AS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOR THE RULING GOVERNMENT CONSERVATIVE PARTY SINCE THE SUEZ CANAL CRISIS.THE EMERGENCY CABINET MEETING FOR WHICH MINISTERS CUT SHORT HOLIDAYS ABROAD CANCELLED OFFICIAL APPOINTMENTS LASTED TWO HOURS AND WAS CONCERNED SOLELY WITH THE PROFUMO AFFAIR AND THE COMING PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE.

THE CABINET HAD BEFORE IT THE REPORT OF LORD DILHORNE, THE LORD CHANCELLOR, ON THE SECURITY ASPECTS OF THE CASE WHICH FORCED THE WAR MINISTER, MR JOHN PROFUMO, TO RESIGN HIS POST AND HIS SEAT IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS.WHEN THE MEETING WAS OVER POLITICAL OBSERVERS BELIEVED THAT PRIME MINISTER MACMILLAN HAD RECEIVED A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE FROM HIS COLLEAGUES AND THAT THE OPPOSITION IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS WOULD FACE A UNITED FRONT FROM THE GOVERNMENT.

A COPY OF LORD DILHORNE'S REPORT WAS BEING SENT TO THE LEADER OF THE LABOUR OPPOSITION, MR HAROLD WILSON, WHO WILL RECEIVE IT ON HIS RETURN FROM HIS VISIT TO MOSCOW AT THE WEEKEND.

A STRONG CONSERVATIVE FRONT IS REGARDED AS ESSENTIAL IF THE PARTY IS TO SURVIVE THE SHOCK OF MR PROFUMO'S STATEMENT THAT HE HAD MISLED THE HOUSE OF COMMONS ABOUT THIS RELATIONSHIP WITH MODEL CHRISTINE KEELER.

FILMED LEAVING ADMIRALTY HOUSE WERE: MR DUNCAN SANDYS, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COMMONWEALTH AND FOR THE COLONIES; MR.HAROLD MACMILLAN, THE PRIME MINISTER;LORD HAILSHAM, LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL; MR.ERNEST MARPLES, MINISTER OF TRANSPORT; MR BOYD-CARPENTER, CHIEF SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY; MR.REGINALD MAUDLING, CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER; MR.R.A.BUTLER, FIRST SECRETARY OF STATE; MR.CHRISTOPHER SOAMES, MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE; SIR KIETH JOSEPH,MINISTER OF HOUSING; MR.HENRY BROOKE, HOME SECRETARY; LORD DILHORNE, THE LORD CHANCELLOR; LORD HOME, THE FOREIGN SECRETARY; AND MR.PETER THORNEYCROFT, MINISTER OF DEFENCE.
