  • Description

President Idi Amin of Uganda opened an agricultural and industrial show in Jinja on Wednesday (9 October) as part of his country's Independence Day celebrations.

Fair officials showed the President around the stalls displaying the country's main producers -- particularly the stand for sugar, a product which the President had recently ordered that production should be stepped up.

Earlier this month, the President authorised his Finance Minister to allocate more than 2.6-million pounds sterling to buy machinery to bring sugar production in Uganda's two biggest estates -- once owned by Asians -- back to normal.

It was reported that production in one of the country's largest sugar plantations has fallen by 75 per cent since 1972.

Agricultural products provide the country with half of its total income yearly.

In addition, there is an increasing contribution from the livestock industry, which the Government has launched an ambitious programme to develop it.
