    Oarsmen form East Germany took top honours for the second successive year at the Henley Royal Regatta on the River Thames on Saturday (4 July) Although the weather was far from ideal for the champagne and strawberries" event it proved to be a pleasant enough day and there were large crowds on hand to see the rowers.

    The East German crew from Rostock confirmed their reputation as the world's best rowing eight when winning the Grand Challenge Cup from the Dutch team. But the East German crew which included six European gold medalists was forced to go all out before gaining a half a length verdict over Aegir of Holland.

    Overseas challengers also fared well during the day and collected several cups. The schoolboys' trophy went to Canada's Ridley College crew won beat Britain's Hampton Grammer School eight. And a German pair from the Dynamo Club in Berlin beat the Australian champions for the Silver Goblets trophy.
