  • Description

THE UNITED STATES ARMY HEADQUARTERS IN HEIDLEBERG YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) DECIDED TO BOW TO THE PRESSURE FROM WEST GERMANY AND CLAMPED DOWN ON A MILITARY PROJECT TO REFURBISH OLD S.S. BUNKERS IN THE FORMER NAZI RESORT AND OPEN THEM TO AMERICAN ARMY TRIPPERS.

THE DIRECTOR OF THE AMERICAN ARMY RECREATION AREA AT BERCHTESGADEN, LIEUTENANT-COLONEL VICTOR CLARK, SAID THE BUNKERS - SITUATED UNDER HERMANN GOERING'S MOUNTAIN HOME - WOULD BE OPENED AS SCHEDULED, BUT WOULD BE LEFT IN THEIR BARE CONCRETE FORM. IT HAD BEEN PLANNED TO REFURNISH THE BUNKERS IN THE STYLE OF THE NAZI LEADERS WITH CHAIRS, TABLES AD EXTRAVAGANT CURTAINS AND ALSO TO STAND A TAILOR'S DUMMY AT THE ENTRANCE DRESSED IN FULL S.S. UNIFORM AND HOLDING A GUN.

COLONEL CLARK SAID THE IDEA HAD BEEN TO CHARGE VISITORS A ONE DOLLAR ENTRANCE FEE TO SEE THE BUNKERS. THE MONEY WOULD HAVE GONE TOWARDS IMPROVING AMERICAN FORCES RECREATIONAL FACILITIES. BUT THE COLONEL DENIED - AS WAS SUGGESTED BY WEST GERMAN OFFICIALS AND NEWSPAPERS - THAT THE OLD NAZI STRONGHOLD WOULD HAVE BEEN TURNED INTO A "HITLER MUSEUM".

PROTESTS AGAINST THE SCHEME HAD COME FROM SEVERAL QUARTERS, INCLUDING ONE FROM ALFONS GOPPEL, MINISTER-PRESIDENT OF BAVARIA.
