Background: Tens of thousands of the inhabitants of the Czechoslovak capital today celebrated the holiday of working people - the May Day.
The huge manifestation took place, for the first time at spatious Letna area, where working people, members of the organization of youth had pioneers gathered from early morning.
Just before nine o'clock the foremost representatives of the party and the state entered the official rostrum - the general secretary of the General Committee of the CP, Gustav Husak, prime-minister Lubomir Strougal, the members and candidates of the presidium of the Central Committee, representatives of the Federal Parliament, the National Front, the government and the other personalities of the political and social life.
The participants in the manifestation were first greeted by the head secretary of the city committee of the CP, Antonin Kapek, and then Gustav Hosak delivered his speech which was listened to with great attention had approval.
After the and of this official part of the celebrations the head of the procession, formed by 900 workmen, soldiers, members of People Militia and young people, started to move. The citizens of the all Prague districts followed.
