    WEST GERMANY HAS AWARDED THE HESSER STATE "RESCUE MEDAL" TO LONDONER PHILIP DYER, AGED 27, WHO FIGURED IN LAST MONTH'S DRAMATIC RESCUE BID OF TWO INJURED EAST GERMAN GUARDS.

    THE GUARDS WERE BLOWN UP BY THEIR OWN MINES AFTER CHATTING AT A BORDER POINT WITH A PARTY FROM A NEARBY INTERNATIONAL YOUTH CAMP. ONE HAD HIS LEG AMPUTATED.

    DYER AND TWO WEST GERMAN BOY SCOUTS CROSSED THE BORDER TO ANSWER THE GUARD'S CRIES FOR HELP. THEY CRAWLED UNDER THE BARBED WIRE AND DRAGGED THE TWO INJURED MEN BACK INTO WEST GERMANY TERRITORY.

    THE GUARDS - AT THEIR REQUEST - WERE LATER RETURNED TO EAST GERMANY WHERE AN ASSURANCE HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN GIVEN THEY WOULD NOT BE PUNISHED FOR LEAVING THEIR PATROL AREA. EARLIER, EAST GERMAN SOLDIERS HAD COLLECTED D.M. 750 (ABOUT GBP70) FOR THE YOUTHS WHO TOOK PART IN THE RESCUE.

    FILM SHOWS DYER, A SERGEANT IN THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT, TERRITORIAL ARMY, RECEIVING FROM THE WEST GERMAN AMBASSADOR DR. HASSO VON ETZDORF IN LONDON THE "RESCUE MEDAL" OF THE WEST GERMAN STATE OF HESSEN.
