A hunting expedition to the arctic arrives back in Edmonton with six muskox from the Thelon Game preserve. The animals...three males and three females....will be used in a twenty-year breeding experiment program on the farm of Al Oeming, a few miles east of Edmonton.
The expedition had planned a three week safari after the muskox, but the hunt was successful after only five days. Mr. Oeming's research program has been planned under the guidance of the Department of Northern Affairs, with a view towards re-stocking the rapidly diminishing herds of muskox in Canada's north. The muskox is a rare animal, and the hunting party was under strict orders not to kill any of the animals unless a human life was in danger. The expedition obtained three-month old calves for the program. The males weigh about one-hundred-and-fifty pounds, the females about one hundred. when fully grown, the muskox will weigh between seven hundred and one thousand pounds.
Mr. Oeming will be required to make regular reports to the Department of Northern Affairs on the progress of the experiment for the next twenty years.
