  • Description

Adolf Von Thadden was re-elected leader of the extreme Ring-Wing National Democratic Party by an overwhelming majority at a conference in Wertheim, West Germany, on Saturday (February 14).

Hundreds of demonstrators protesting against the holding of the meeting clashed with police outside the conference hall.

Herr Von Thadden was re-elected as leader after offering to resign the post after his party failed to win any seats in West Germany's parliament in last year's general election. He polled 527 of the 611 votes at the conference e and will now lead the party in five State parliamentary elections scheduled for this year.

Earlier demonstrators burst through barbed wire cordons and battled with 400 police guarding the congress hall. Tear gas and a low flying helicopter drove them back as they tried to storm the building.
