Background: It was announced today (Saturday) in Dar-es-Salaam, that the leader of the Island of Zanzibar, Sheikh Abeid Karume, was assassinated last night. Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere made the announcement after several hours of rumours arising out of a total curfew and transport clampdown by Zanzibar authorities last night.
In view of this news, we are re-releasing this film which was shot during the January celebrations of the 8th Anniversary of the revolution which toppled the former Arab Sultanate, bringing Sheikh Karume to power. Not only does it show Sheikh Karume and Vice-President Kawawa attending the military march past and public celebrations, but also shows the 600 prisoners released during a celebratory amnesty. Shown during a visit to a housing development is Sheikh Kombo, the Secretary-General of the Afro-Shiraz Party--wounded during the assassination of Karume and now in hospital.
