  • Description

The Mummy of Egypt's warrior Pharoah Rameses Two was returned to Cairo on Thursday (12 May), after seven months of controversial restoration treatment in Paris.

SYNOPSIS: The cadaver was taken back to Cairo's National Museum, where Egyptian experts and museum officials and gathered to greet the ruthless old warrior king. French scientists had claimed the corpse might decay unless it received early medical treatment. They say it was suffering from 60 different forms of fungi and the ravages of two species of insects. Some Egyptian experts disagreed with the diagnosis.

They sent a document to the Egyptian government saying there was nothing mor serious than a loose toe -- which could easily be stuck on again. They claimed France was seeking international credit for saving the mummy.

The Sun King of Ancient Egypt died 3,250 years ago and he's now one of Cairo's major tourist attractions. French experts carried out 140 tests before deciding to use radiation treatment. Now Egyptian scientists are to compare photographs taken of Ramases last year with the corpse now to discover what the treatment has achieved.

For the time being, the Pharoah will lie in a private room in the wooden sarcophagus in which he was buried, until a decision is made on whether to put him back on display in the museum's mummy room.
