About 100,000 people are near to starving in Northern Kenya because of a prolonged drought. The Kenya Red Cross and the Kenya Freedom from Hunger Committee are making all-out efforts to get food and water to the worst-hit areas. With the help of overseas organisations and donations from within Kenya itself famine relief supplies have been issued to about 80,000 people.
A Red Cross team headed by Mr. Gunnar Rosen from Finland has set up a soup kitchen at Dol Dol in Kenya's northern desert where about 1,000 cattle have died. Nearly 9,000 hungry nomads from the vicinity were fed on its first day. Some walked 50 miles (80 km) to get food and water.
