Background: Prison terms ranging from one to 25 years were demanded in Athens on Monday (8 September) for 27 Greek army officers and soldiers charged with torturing political prisoners during the military dictatorship in Greece.
The "torture trial" stated on 7 August and the verdict was expected to be brought down on Thursday (11 September).
The accused served with the special investigation branch of the Athens Military Police which became the feared security service during the seven years of military rule that ended in July last year.
The Public Prosecutor, Major Michael Zouvelos, told a Court Martial: "The special branch was beyond any control by the armed forces leadership or the army-backed government."
He was summing up for the prosecution in the trial of the 14 officers and 17 soldiers accused of using torture to extract information from political prisoners about their activities to topple the military regime. The prosecutor asked that four be acquitted.
More than 100 witnesses have testified, including Lady Amalia Fleming, Greek-born widow of Sir Alexander Fleming, the penicillin pioneer. She was among those alleged to have been tortured.
The maximum 25-year sentence has been demanded for retired Lieutenant Colonels Theodore Theophylogiannakos and Nicholaos and a 15-year sentence for Major Anastasios Spanos.
Witnesses told the court the accused beat them, forced them to stand for days, deprived them of food, water and sleep, forced them to masturbate in public and eat their own excrement in order to make them confess.
