  • Description

Israeli forces on the Golan Heights were on a state of alert on Sunday (13 April) in preparation for ceremonies marking their Independence and Remembrance days.

It was a routine alert, one they are put on just before each holiday now, keeping in mind the 1973 war with the Arab when they were caught unawares by a sudden attack during a holiday period.

Artillery battalions on the Golan Heights practice gun alerts at least once a day every day of the week, but just before holidays the practices have special meaning.

The 175 mm guns they use have a range of 25 kms and are of the same type that had Damascus well within range during the October war of 1973.

The guns are self propelled and can move very quickly into the Syrian territory they overlook if they are called on to do so.

The only object separating them from the Syrians is a tiny United Nations outpost, manned by soldiers of the Peruvian peace keeping force.
