  • Description

The situation remains tense in the Catalan region of Spain as nationalist groups continue to press their demands for home rule.

SYNOPSIS: Home rule was given to the region in a 1932 decree, but this was revoked by the late General Franco after the 1936-39 civil war. Since then, Catalonia has remained radical and carried on with its anti-Franco demonstrations and traditions, With the its anti-Franco demonstrations and traditions. With the General now dead, they want nothing short of a complete sweeping-away of the Franco Spain. In more recent times, especially after Juan Carlos became King, the marches and demonstrations have become more frequent. In their most widely-publicised march so far, the Catalonians used six starting points in the region. The march ended ten weeks late in Poblet, near Barcelona, where police used truncheons to break it up. The demonstration, which was officially banned, was organised by Pax Christi, an international peace movement. According to the movement, the point of the march was to get people outside the big cities thinking about Catalan nationalism and to raise their level of politician consciousness. It was supported by some 200 opposition groups, including Catalonia's many political parties.

The demonstrations coincided with a strike by thousands of workers in the Basque area of Spain. It was in protest against the death of a Basque demonstrator, shot by police a few days earlier. The strike, originally called for one day only, was extended to protest against alleged police brutality in quelling demonstrations. Like Catalonia, the Basque country is pressing for home rule.

At its height, the four-day strike involved some 300 thousand workers and it virtually paralysed the Basque country. But they returned to work, after mayors called on the national police Chief to curb alleged police excesses.
