Dr. Frondizi arrived in Washington, Jan. 20, for the first official visit by an Argentine?

  • Description

Dr. Frondizi arrived in Washington, Jan. 20, for the first official visit by an Argentine President to the USA. President Eisenhower and Mr. John Foster Dulles headed the welcoming party at the airport. In their exchange of greetings the two President commented on the cordial relations between their two countries.

Behind him President Frondizi has left a seething Argentine, in the throes of a general strike and mobilization. Protest against the rising cost of living and the Government's intention to hand-over the nationalized meat packing station to private enterprise are the alleged causes.

Troops, tanks, police and tear-gas were used to dislodge strikers in the Mataderos packing station and promptly 62 neo-Peronist unions called a strike to support the packers' cause.

Air, road and water transport, postal and many other services were crippled. Bombs were placed on railway lines and urban train services were almost at a standstill. A few were still in service, manned by officials. Shops closed down in many parts.

Between 400 and 500 labour leader, Peronists and Communists were reported to have been arrested and imprisoned aboard a ship outside Buenos Aires port.

The Government's first important move against the strikers was to mobilize Buenos Aires transport workers. Under armed guards drivers took out trams and buses.
