Background: Soccer.. and New York Cosmos, the American champions of 1978, drew two-two with World All-Stars team in New York on Wednesday (30 August). The All-Stars led twice, but the home team came back each time to force the draw in front of a crowd of fifty thousand.
SYNOPSIS: The great Dutch player, Johan Cruyff came out of retirement to make guest appearance for Cosmos. He received the customary star entrance through a tunnel of applauding teammates. Cruyff recently turned down an approach to play for Arsenal in England.
Cosmos former star Pele got the crowds' adulation.
The All stars team, in the dark strip and attacking left to right, was bursting with international talent, and coached by Argentina's successful World Cup mentor Cesar Menotti. They were quickly into attack, but had two shots somewhat luckily parried away by Cosmos goalkeeper Jack Brand.
Then came the All Starts' first gaol a series of short passes across the field worked the ball to Brazil's veteran Rivelino, who struck truly from an angle.
Cosmos fans urged on their favourites. Cruyff, was elusive, but did not shoot strongly enough to beat All Stars' Brazilian goalkeeper Leao.
During the interval, girl cheerleaders brought a lively, and totally American, touch to the evenings.
In the second half, Cosmos hit back. The cross finds Chinaglia, whose fine ball control sets up a volley that hurtles into the net.
The All Stars were proving awkward guests for the home team and their supporters, who are accustomed to success. Mexican midfield player Cuellar beats a tackle and calmly side-foots the All Stars' second goal.
Towards the end, the sombre scoreboard was given a better look for Cosmos. A clever backheel goes to Seninho, and he scores their second with a low drive, allowing everyone to go home happy.
