  • Description

WIDESPREAD FLOODS HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY MONSOONS AND TORRENTIAL RAINS WHICH HAVE SWEPT PARTS OF INDONESIA, THE PHILIPPINES, SARAWAK, NORTH BORNEO AND BRUNEI.

IN SARAWAK ALONE, ABOUT 25,000 PEOPLE HAD TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES BECAUSE OF THE FLOODS, MAINLY IN THE NORTHERN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY. MANY LONG HOUSES AND OTHER HOMES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED AND THOUSANDS OF ACRES OF VALUABLE PADDY HAVE BEEN LOST.

BRITISH FORCES, SENT TO BRUNEI AND SARAWAK LAST MONTH, HAVE BEEN ENGAGED IN FLOOD RELIEF WORK, FLYING STRANDED PEOPLE TO SAFETY AND DELIVERING MUCH NEEDED FOOD AND OTHER SUPPLIES BY HELICOPTER AND BOAT.

AROUND THE OIL TOWN OF MIRI, ROADS HAVE BEEN BLOCKED AND INSTALLATIONS DAMAGED BY LANDSLIDES CAUSED BY THE FLOODS.

EARLY OFFICIAL ESTIMATES OF THE DAMAGE IN SARAWAK TOTAL ABOUT FOUR MILLION MALAYAN DOLLARS (NEARLY GBP500,000)
