  • Description

The Ivory Coast Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Monsieur Louis-Antoine Aduko, held a lavish reception at the exclusive Charlton Towers Hotel in Knightsbridge, London on Tuesday (7 December) to mark the 16th anniversary of independence of his country.

SYNOPSIS: M. Aduko and his wife, Marcelle, greeted each of the 400 invited guests, who included foreign diplomats, industry representatives and Ivorians living in London. The Ivory Coast was formerly a province of French West Africa and in 1958 was declared a self-governing member of the French community. Two years later it became an independent republic.

Independence celebrations in the Ivory Coast got under way with a football match on Monday (6 December) between the Sporting Club of Gagnoa and Abidjan Stadium for the President of the Republic's Cup. The main celebrations were held on Tuesday in Koumassi, a densely populated quarter of Abidjan, with folk dancing in the afternoon and fireworks at the presidential palace at night.

President Houphouet-Boigny also chose independence day to announce that the country had made a favourable balance of payments last financial year, due mainly to increased exports of agricultural products. Ivory Coast is Africa's largest exporter of coffee and timber.
