Background: Saudi Arabia has begun mass deportation of Chad nationals. It has ordered out about 5,000 people accused of living off crime. It says most Chadians originally arrived in Saudi Arabia during the annual religious pilgrimage to Mecca. But many failed to go home, and lived on in Jeddah and other big cities, often without work. The authorities say many Chadians have engaged in drug trafficking and delinquency, theft, robbery and rape was commonplace. Few of them had religious motives for going to Saudi Arabia in the first place, the authorities say. Under Saudi Arabian law, the police were unable to imprison them, so they decided on deportation instead. Last week (11 February) the first deportees arrived back in N'Djamena -- 140 men and women in a Saudi Arabian plane.
