Background: Reports from the Afghan capital, Kabul, say thousands of Soviet troops, trained in guerrilla warfare, are being moved into the mountainous countryside to counter rebel Afghan forces. And as Soviet pressure builds up against the rebels, hundreds more Afghan refugees are arriving at camps near the Khyber Pass on the Pakistan border to escape the fighting.

SYNOPSIS: Since the Soviet troops entered Afghanistan an estimated 850,000 refugees have fled to the Pakistan border. Their trek from mountain villages has always been long and arduous. But for the most recent arrivals at camps near the khyber Pass the trip held particular danger. Soviet anti-guerrilla forces have covered the border regions with explosive mines and time bombs dropped from helicopters. Even for the Afghan tribes people who have a broad knowledge of local terrain the risk of sudden death looms large.

The refugees discuss the perils of their journey when they arrive at the camps. They tell the tribal elders of any special danger spots encountered. Camp leaders are also able to advise the new arrivals on the problems they will face settling in Pakistan. Food will be a critical factor but at least for the time being bags of grain are available. Much of this food is provided by the United Nations which has donated 100-million dollars this year towards Pakistan's refugee problem.
