  • Description

A meeting between Kenya's two best-known political figures, Tom Mboya, president of the Nairobi People's Convention Party, and Michael Blundell, leader of the New Kenya group of moderates in the Legislative Council and one-time Minister of Agriculture in the Government of Kenya, was EXCLUSIVELY filmed by Visnews in Nairobi's Legislative Council building July 20.

Mboya went to great pains to assert there had been no change in his position on the subjects of the White Highlands settlement and universal franchise. He is still unalterably opposed to the exclusive reservation of the Kenya Highlands for white settlers, He believed in the development of Kenya into a democracy, according all individuals full democratic rights as against any communal privilege. He would not compromise on the need for undiluted democracy for Kenya, and did not agree with "any idea of qualitative franchise or any idea of partnership or multi-racialism."
Blundell, while agreeing with Mboya that the Highlands should be opened up to "competent" African farmers, could not condone universal adult suffrage. He obviously feared that Kenya's European settlers would be so 'swamped' in an election, that they would lose all 'say' in governing the country. This he thought would be "unreasonable" in view of European contributions to kenya's history and development.

In London British Members of Parliament are debating a proposal by Premier Macmillan for an advisory commission to go cut to Central Africa in preparation for next year's review of the Federal Constitution of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. On July 23 British Colonial Secretary Lennox-Boyd will report on the death of native prisoners at Kenya's Hola Detention Camp.
