    THE ITALIAN SOCIALIST AND SOCIAL DEMOCRAT PARTIES MERGED TODAY (SUNDAY) TO BECOME THE THIRD BIGGEST PARTY AFTER THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS AND COMMUNISTS. SOME 15,000 DELEGATES FROM ALL OVER ITALY PROCLAIMED THE BIRTH OF THE UNITED SOCIALIST PARTY BY ACCLAMATION AT A MEETING IN ROME, AND ALSO NOMINATED THE VETERAN SOCIALIST AND DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, SIGNOR PIETRO NENNI, AS PARTY PRESIDENT.

    SIGNOR NENNI WAS ACCLAIMED PRESIDENT IN AN EMOTIONAL OVATION. THE DELEGATEES ALSO APPOINTED TWO PARTY SECRETARIES -- SIGNOR MARIO TANASSI, OF THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATS, AND SIGNOR FRANCESCO DE MARTINO, OF THE SOCIALIST PARTY. THE MEETING TOOK PLACE IN A BIG INDOOR SPORT STADIUM UNDER A FOREST OF RED BANNERS AND TO THE STRAINS OVER LOUDSPEAKERS OF THE RED FLAG AND OTHER SOCIALIST SONGS.

    IN FORMING THE UNITED SOCIALISTS, THE TWO PARTIES HEALED A 19-YEAR-OLD BREACH THAT FOLLOWED THE NOW 75-YEAR-OLD SIGNOR NENNI'S ALLIANCE WITH THE COMMUNISTS IN THE JANUARY 1947 ELECTION. THE UNITED SOCIALIST WILL HAVE 95 DEPUTIES IN THE 630-MEMBER CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES, AND PRESENT A GROWING CHALLENGE TO BOTH THE RULING CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS AND THE COMMUNISTS.
