    Background: PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA

An Australian Army Reserve recruiting display in Perth, Western Australia turned to tragedy on July 24 when a parachutist fell 1,800 metres (5,900 ft) to his death. He was one of four Special air Service parachutists giving a public display of their talents before a large at crowd at a suburban shopping centre. They jumped, and three parachutist landed safely. The fourth, Lance Corporal Peter William Rawlings, of Coleambally, New South Wales, got into trouble when his parachute failed to open. After struggling unsuccessfully with the harness, he cut it free. But his emergency parachute also failed to open and spectators watched in horror as he plunged into the garden of a nearby house. He died instantly.
