  • Description

POLAND AND SCOTLAND MET IN KATOWICE ON SUNDAY IN A QUALIFYING TIE IN THE WORLD CUP SERIES. 100,000 PEOPLE PACKED THE STADIUM TO WATCH THE GAME WHICH ENDED IN A 1-1 DRAW.

THE GAME WAS PLAYED IN HEAVY RAIN AND THE POLES, PLAYING IN WHITE SHIRTS AND RED SHORTS, DOMINATED THE FIRST HOUR. THEY WERE QUICK AND THEIR FOOTWORK WAS EXCELLENT. AFTER 51 MINUTES POLAND PENETRATED THE SCOTTISH DEFENCE AND IT WAS LENTNER WHO PUT THE BALL IN THE NET. IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN POLAND'S FOURTH GOAL BUT FOR THE BRILLIANT PLAY OF BROWN, SCOTLAND'S GOAL-KEEPER.

AFTER POLAND'S GOAL, SCOTLAND BEGAN TO GET MORE INTO THE GAME. 14 MINUTES LATER THEY SCORED AFTER A SHOT FROM HENDERSON HAD BEEN HALF CLEARED AND DENNIS LAW, 16 YARDS FROM THE GOAL MOUTH, VOLLEYED THE BALL INTO THE NET THROUGH A CLUSTER OF DEFENDERS.

THE 1966 WORLD CUP IS BEING STAGED IN ENGLAND. QUALIFYING TIES ARE NOW BEING PLAYED. THE FINAL WILL BE PLAYED IN LONDON'S WEMBLEY STADIUM AND TODAY (MONDAY) BRITAIN'S MINISTER FOR SPORT, MR. DENNIS HOWELL WENT ALONG TO HAVE A LOOK AT THE STADIUM.

ALL THE ARENAS FOR THE WORLD CUP GAMES ARE BEING SMARTENED UP AND IMPROVED WHERE POSSIBLE. WEMBLEY, WHICH IS ENGLAND'S LEADING FOOTBALL STADIUM, HOLDS 100,000 AND ALL THE SEATING IS COVERED.

A RECORD NUMBER OF 68 COUNTRIES ARE COMPETING FOR FINAL PLACES IN THE WORLD CUP. THE LAST 16 NATIONS WILL PLAY IN ENGLAND.
