THE STRONGEST OVERSEAS CHALLENGE AT HENLEY COMES FROM THE UNITED STATES AND WEST GERMANY -- BUT OTHER PARTS OF EUROPE ARE ALSO REPRESENTED. AMONG THE CREWS IS THE VESPER 8 FROM PHILADELPHIA IN THE UNITED STATES -- THE BOAT THAT WON A GOLD MEDAL FOR AMERICA AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES.

AN EARLY EVENT WAS A RACE BETWEEN THE ENGLISH SINGLE-SCULLER J. S. PILGRIM-MORRIS AND THE AMERICAN, F. X. SULGER -- OF THE NEW YORK ATHLETIC CLUB. THIS WAS THE SECOND HEAT IN THE HENLEY DIAMOND CHALLENGE SCULLS. IT WAS A VICTORY FOR THE AMERICAN, SULGER.

CANADA WAS VICTORIOUS IN THE TWELFTH HEAT OF THE PRINCESS ELIZABETH CHALLENGE CUP. THIS WAS A RACE BETWEEN AN EIGHT FROM SHAWNIGAN LAKE SCHOOL IN CANADA, AND CHELTENHAM COLLEGE IN ENGLAND. THE PRINCESS ELIZABETH CHALLENGE CUP WAS ORIGINALLY INSTITUTED IN 1946 AS A RACE BETWEEN EIGHTS FROM BRITAIN'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS -- BUT THE EVENT WAS OPENED TO OVERSEAS SCHOOLS IN 1964.

ANOTHER RECORD FELL IN THE THIRD HEAT OF THE DIAMOND CHALLENGE SCULLS. THIS WAS BETWEEN A. HILL OF EAST GERMANY -- A TOKYO OLYMPIC GAMES SILVER MEDALLIST, AND D. R. SPERO, A 23-YEAR-OLD UNITED STATES SCULLING CHAMPION.
