  • Description

A 30 MEMBER HIGH LEVEL JAPANESE TRADE MISSION ARRIVED IN LAGOS YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) FOR A THREE DAY VISIT. THE MEMBERS WILL HOLD TALKS ECONOMIC AND INDUSTRIAL LEADERS WITH THE AIM OF IMPROVING TRADE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

THE MISSION IS ON A SALES PROMOTION TOUR OF NINE AFRICAN STATES. TALKS HAVE BEEN HELD WITH GOVERNMENT LEADERS IN ALL COUNTRIES VISITED SO FAR. THE TEAM IS LED BY MR. FUMIHIKO KONO, VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE JAPANESE FEDERATION OF ECONOMIC ORGANISATIONS AND THE CHAIRMAN OF MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES LIMITED.

MR. KONO SAID AT THE AIRPORT THAT THE MISSION WOULD DISCUSS WITH NIGERIAN LEADERS THE INDUSTRIAL AREAS IN WHICH JAPAN COULD INVEST TO HELP REDRESS THE CURRENT IMBALANCE BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

NIGERIAN IMPORTS FROM JAPAN IN 1967 AMOUNTED TO NEARLY 19 MILLION POUNDS (46 MILLION DOLLARS) COMPARED WITH JUST OVER SEVEN MILLION POUNDS (16 MILLION DOLLARS) WORTH OF EXPORTS FROM NIGERIA. BUT THE TRADE GAP IS BELIEVED TO HAVE NARROWED IN 1968 FOLLOWING IMPORT RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED IN NIGERIA.

MR. KONO SAID THAT HE WAS SURE THAT BY THE TIME THE MISSION LEFT NIGERIA THERE WOULD BE A CONCRETE PLAN TO IMPROVE THE IMBALANCE.

THE MISSION GOES TO ACCRA AFTER LAGOS.
