Background: The first Pope in history to come to the United States, Paul the 6th, arrived by jet plane from Rome at New York's John F.Kennedy Airport at 9:27 a.m.on October 4th.It was the beginning of an historic 14-hour visit in which he would make a plea for peace at the United Nation and visit with President Johnson in New York City.
The "Pilgrim Pope", who has travelled farther during the 27 months of his reign than all of his predecessors, landed after a 4,335 mile flight from Rome aboard an Italian Air Lines DC-8 jetliner.
(Among the dignitaries at the Airport were Governor Rockefeller of New York State.Mayor Robert Wagner of New York City, and United States Senator Robert Kennedy of New York State, U Thant, Secretary General of the U-N and Secretary of State Dean Rusk.)

Shortly after arrival the Pope got into a specially re-built open limousine with his host Francis Cardinal Spellman of the New York City Archdiocese.The motorcade went a short distance and then stopped while the Pope transferred to another limousine with a glass "bubble" top.
Police estimate that between 3 and 4-million persons would see the Pontiff while he is in New York City.
The Pope's motorcade route to the heart of New York City is 24 miles.
