  • Description

    Despite their different political systems, South Africa and Mozambique have established closer links with a new Rail Agreement which was signed in Johannesburg on Monday (26 February). Maputo in Mozambique is an important port for South Africa and the agreement helps co-ordinate the flow of rail traffic between the port and South African cities.

    SYNOPSIS: The new agreement comes after a long association between the two rail networks. South African Railways continued to assist Mozambique in maintaining port facilities at Maputo after the Marxist government took over in 1975. Now about fifteen thousand tons of South African exports move daily through Maputo. The general manager of South African Railways, Doctor Kobus Loubser, represented South Africa at the ceremony and he called on Mr. Alcantara Santos to sign on behalf of Mozambique. The public signing in Johannesburg was intended to illustrate the desire by both countries to draw closer together in the fields of industries and commerce.

    Mr. Santos, National Director of Mozambique Rail, addressed the delegates;
    The first rail communication between Mozambique and South Africa was opened in 1894 and this is their fifth rail agreement.
