    On June the 11th seven countries sent war ships to Brazil to join in the 100th anniversary celebration of the naval victory of Brazil over Paraguay.

    The seven countries which sent war ships to the celebration were: Great Britain, Argentina, Portugal, Holland, Spain, Italy, and Chile.There was no United States involvement because of U.S.involvement in the Dominican Republic and Vietnam, and the fact that American naval vessels had been required in the Atlantic Ocean for the recovery of the Gemini-4 astronauts.They had no time to reach Brazil.

    The founder of the Brazilian navy as an effective fighting force was an Englishman, Admiral Lord Cochrane, in the early 1820's.

    The battle of Riachuelo was fought on the Riachuelo River which runs into the River Parana, near the Argentine City of Corrientes.

    The fight lasted the entire day and evening of June 11, 1865.Brazil won the battle and eventually the war, although outnumbered in fighting forces at the beginning of hostilities 80-thousand to 16-thousand men.
