  • Description

Anwar Sadat, soldier and politician, has been adopted by the National Assembly of the United Arab Republic as the candidate to succeed the late Gamal Abdel Nasser as President of Egypt. The nomination will be the subject of a nationwide plebiscite on Thursday (October 15) and his election is considered almost certain.

Mr Sadat, a former colonel in the Egyptian army and a former president of the Egyptian National Union, was introduced to the assembly by Doctor Labib Shoker, a senior member of President Nasser's administration. Mr Sadat's selection by the National Assembly was unanimous.

In his nomination address to the National Assembly, Mr Sadat pledged himself to follow the course set by President Nasser. That was, he said, to liberate Arab territories now held by Israel and to restore the rights of the people of Palestine.

He also spoke of the time of deep grief Egypt was enduring following the death of President Nasser; a period from which the country would emerge resolved to carry on Nasser's work.
