  • Description

On Monday (February 8th) thousands of South Vietnamese troops amoved across the border into Laos to strike at North Vietnamese supply bases and infiltration routes. There had been rumours for a week that the thrust would take place. For days South Vietnamese and United States trucks, artillery and armoured vehicles had moved toward the frontier. American aircraft provided air support for the South Vietnamese troops.

It was just after dawn when South Vietnamese troops and armour rolled across the border into the so-called southern panhandle of Laos. American Cobra gunship helicopters ferried in many troops. Four gunships were shot down but contact with the North Vietnamese was generally slight.

Along the border were signs warning American military personnel not to proceed farther.

During the build-up American aircraft accidentally bombed a South Vietnamese unit, killing seven soldiers and wounding six.
