    FORMER BRITISH GRAND PRIX DRIVER INNES IRELAND WITH CO-DRIVERS MIKE TAYLOR AND ANDREW HEDGES IN A MERCEDES-BENZ 280 WERE THE FIRST LONDON-SYDNEY MARTHON DRIVERS TO REACH THE DELHI CHECKPOINT LAST NIGHT (NOVEMBER 30). THEY ARRIVED THREE HOURS BEFORE THEIR CONTROL TIME.

    SECOND INTO THE CONTROL POINT WERE AUSTRALIANS HARRY FIRTH, GRAHAM HOINVILLE AND GARY CHAPMAN IN A FORD FALCON GT. THE CAR IS ENTERED BY THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY OF AUSTRALIA.

    BRITAIN'S ROGER CLARK AND HIS SWEDISH CO-DRIVER OVE ANDERSSEN IN A FORD LOTUS CORTINA CAME IN THIRD AT DELHI -- ALTHOUGH LATEST REPORTS FROM THE LONDON ORGANISERS SAID THE PAIR WERE LEADING ON POINTS. ALL THREE LEADERS ARRIVED WITHIN TEN MINUTES OF ONE ANOTHER.

    MIKE TAYLOR, CO-DRIVER IN THE LEADING MERCEDES, HAD DRIED BLOOD ON HIS CHEEK AND EXPLAINED THAT THE CAR HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN A POLITICAL DEMONSTRATION IN PAKISTAN, WHERE A BUS WAS BEING STONED.

    TWO AUSTRALIAN CARS CAME FOURTH AND FIFTH INTO DELHI, BOTH SPONSORED BY THE SYDNEY TELEGRAPH. FOURTH WAS THE HOLDEN GTS DRIVEN BY D. MACKAY, D. REYNOLDS AND D. LIDDLE, AND FIFTH WAS ANOTHER HOLDEN GTS CREWED BY D. WHITEFORD, E. PERKINS AND HARRY HAWKER.

    ANOTHER EARLY DELHI ARRIVAL WAS THE ALL-WOMAN BRITISH TEAM OF MISS S. SKINNER, MRS. C. SPENDER AND MRS. A. WATSON DRIVING A DEEP SANDERSON ENTERED BY C.J. LAWRENCE.

    RALLY OFFICIALS SAID 45 CARS HAD CROSSED THE HUSEINIWALA BORDER INTO INDIA BY 7PM LOCAL TIME.
