    The Mille Miglia "thousand-mile" car race, one of the biggest in the world of motor racing, was followed by VISNEWS May 30 as 104 cars left Brescia, Northern Italy, early in the morning and C. Abate and A. Balzarini of Italy returned victors in a three litre Ferrari.

    Ferrari drivers were also second and third: G. Happel and Guichet (France), second and J. Schildt (Switzerland) and R. Pecorini (Italy) third.

    The round journey, covering just over 900 miles, took the competitors through Cremona then Florence - the southern-most point in this tough battle for speed.

    Abate and Balzarini totalled 2hr. 6m 16.9sec for the nine uphill timed stretches with decided the speed-and-regularity test.

    Once one of the world's most gruelling road races, the Mille Miglia became a rally-type event last year - a direct result of the 1957 race when thirteen people were killed.
