  • Description

FOURTEEN SHIPS STRANDED IN THE GREAT BITTER LAKE ON THE SUEZ CANAL SINCE THE MIDDLE EAST WAR IN JUNE LAST YEAR ARE STILL TRAPPED - AND AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE EGYPTIAN AND ISRAELI GOVERNMENTS OVER FREEING THEM APPEARS AS FAR AWAY AS EVER.

AN ATTEMPT TOWARDS CLEARING THE CANAL WHICH WAS INITIATED LAST WEEK ENDED IN A VIOLENT ARTILLERY BATTLE BETWEEN EGYPTIAN AND ISRAELI FORCES RANGED EITHER SIDE OF THE CANAL.

LAST WEEK'S ATTEMPT TO BEGIN CLEARING THE SHIPS WAS INITIATED BY UNITED NATIONS OBSERVERS ON THE CANAL UNDER THE COMMAND OF DR. GUNNAR JARRING. THE BASIS OF THE AGREEMENT WAS THAT EGYPTIAN PATROL BOATS WOULD EXPLORE THE SOUTHERN EXIT OF THE BLOCKED SECTION OF THE CANAL. BUT ISRAELI GUNNERS OPENED FIRE WHEN THE PATROL BOATS APPEARED TO HEAD NORTH.

AN ARTILLERY BATTLE ENSUED, AFTER WHICH BOTH SIDES CALLED OFF THE AGREEMENT - AND THE STRANDED SHIPS REMAINED STRANDED.

SINCE LAST WEEK'S BATTLE, THE SUEZ CANAL HAS BEEN QUIET, WITH BOTH SIDES PATROLLED BY OPPOSING FORCES AND U.N. OBSERVERS, WHO ARE STILL WORKING TO RE-ACTIVATE THE AGREEMENT.

THE SUEZ CANAL IS BLOCKED AT THREE POINTS. AT THE NORTHERN END, NEAR PORT SAID AND THE SOUTHERN EXIT AT SUEZ. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CANAL, AT THE NORTHERN END OF THE GREAT BITTER LAKE, TWO SUNKEN EGYPTIAN SHIPS ARE EFFECTIVELY KEEPING FOURTEEN ASSORTED VESSELS TRAPPED.

FOUR OF THE SHIPS ARE BRITISH, THREE SWEDISH, TWO POLISH, TWO GERMAN, ONE FRENCH, ONE CZECHOSLOVAK AND ONE BULGARIAN.
